Providing training in human factors, safety, and accident investigation

All Psysafe courses are designed and delivered by highly experienced and professional trainers, who have experience of designing and delivering courses for both professional delegates and post-graduate students. Course content, scheduling, and materials are all designed according to adult learning principles to maximise training effectiveness. This active learning approach means that our courses and workshops are highly participative and interactive, with demonstrations, practical exercises and simulations.

i. Incident and accident investigation

This one or two day course is based on accident investigation principles used within the aviation, marine and rail sectors. Unlike many other incident and accident investigation courses, the emphasis is not on the investigation of technical and/or engineering failures, but on the investigation of human contributions to accidents. Similarly, detailed consideration is given to the development of investigative interviewing skills and the analysis of interview evidence.

The two-day version of this course includes a simulation of a major accident with role-played interviews. Although set within an aviation context, this simulation has been successfully used with delegates from a wide range of safety critical industries; alternatively, we will work with you to develop a simulation based on your requirements.

ii. Human factors for safety at work

Human factors are implicated in around 90% of all accidents. Managing the risks associated with people’s behaviour is the key to improving safety at work. However, many managers and health and safety practitioners are unsure what is meant by the term “human factors”, and may also be unclear about how to improve their management of “people risks” in practice.

This half-day interactive workshop is suitable for senior and middle managers with safety responsibilities, as well as health and safety practitioners.

The workshop can be provided as an “add on” to an organisation’s existing accident investigation training or safety training, and is particularly useful where organisations wish to increase their consideration of human factors issues. The workshop can also be a useful springboard for developing a behavioural safety programme.

iii. Safety leadership

This half day workshop is aimed and first-line supervisors and junior managers. It aims to provide a day-to-day working knowledge of human factors issues, sufficient to increase the personal effectiveness and confidence of supervisors and managers at the front line of operations. This course is particularly suitable for newly promoted supervisors, junior managers and personnel with a safety role in day-to-day operations. It can be added to existing training programmes provided to supervisors and managers, and can also be used as part of a wider behavioural safety strategy.

iv. Safety CODES

This workshop is aimed at employees and is an ideal springboard for developing a behavioural safety programme. The workshop focuses on the reinforcement of safe behaviours using the CODES framework which enables colleagues to successfully challenge unsafe behaviours in a non-confrontational manner.

Training evaluation

All delegates on Psysafe courses are invited to participate in the evaluation process. This helps us with the on-going improvement of our programmes. This typically involves completion of a questionnaire which asks for ratings and qualitative comments on the training which has been provided. A short selection of comments from previous course delegates is provided below.

  • “One of the best training events I have ever attended in terms of well-thought out design, content being tailored for the specific needs of delegates, and a highly interactive presentation format… an excellent trainer….”
  • “Thanks! Well-paced course. Lots of group participation. Feel more confident doing the things I’ve been doing right, to try different things, and to be aware of the traps!”
  • “I found this course extremely useful and relevant. I have learned several techniques which I will use in future. Thank you for an excellent, useful, fun informative day!”

Can’t see what you need?

Our consultants have designed and delivered training for directors and senior and middle managers, junior managers and supervisors, professional accident investigators, air traffic controllers, pilots and cabin crew, health and safety practitioners, health and safety lawyers, and postgraduate students.

If you do not see a human factors training course suitable for your needs, please contact us to discuss your requirements. We are always happy to consider proposals for new courses and workshops – and unlike many training organisations, if we accept your suggestion, we will only charge for delivering the course, and not for course development.
